In earlier days a handicraftsman, the typical labourer, received a certain satisfaction from the work he did. His efforts were mostly to his own immediate advantage. He saw the fruits of his work in the complete object he produced and, moreover, the making of this object often required his adaptability or inventiveness to overcome the difficulties which arose. In a real sense one can speak of his being educated by his labour. Today all is changed. A standardized job is done in a standardized manner and a standardized time for a standardized wage.
